Experience RENEWAL

Experience RENEWAL
Happy Sunday!
It’s April and spring is in the air! Spring is a season of renewal - a new begging!
One of the meanings of the word renewal is the replacing or repair of something that is worn out, run-down, or broken.
What may need to be renewed in your mouth ?
One of the areas to look is amalgam (silver) fillings and metal in the dental crowns.
As of January 1, 2025 - dental amalgam is officially banned in Europe as a restorative material due to it’s negative effect on the health and structure of the teeth.
Warning: the following information may make you upset:
- In order to place a “silver” filling the tooth has to be undercut, which means that it is wider at the base than the top - a trapezoid shaped hole in the tooth with the widest part deepest in the tooth. What it means for you is that a LOT of healthy tooth structure has to be removed and the space for the filling has to be a lot larger than the area that needs actual treatment in order for the restoration not to fall out.
- Since the “silver” filling does not bond to the tooth, it just occupies space, there is always a gap between the restoration and the tooth, so there IS ALWAYS bacteria and food debris leaking under the fillings from the time they are placed, leading to associated cavities!
- Furthermore, “silver” fillings, being metal, expand and contract with temperature as we consume food and drinks, much the same way ice breaks rock or asphalt when water gets into cracks, freezes and expands. This creates fractures in the tooth as well as further increasing the gaps between the tooth and the restoration leading to decay, tooth breakage and loss. This sets the patient up for almost guaranteed bigger problems with any teeth with “silver” fillings.
- There is also a toxicity factor. “Silver” fillings have mercury, a heavy metal which is poison to nervous sustem. Metal fillings are linked to the development of neurological conditions such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS (Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis) among others. In some instances levels up to 65 million times the acceptable levels of mercury were found in people with metal restorations! Cancer, autoimmune and kidney disease have also been linked metal in the mouth. The longer these fillings are in, the higher the levels in the body/brain.
- In addition, metal and mercury scraps from dental restorations are a contributor to pollution of the environment, affecting our water and air quality.
Why in the *&@! are metal fillings and crowns allowed in dentistry in the U.S.A. if there are so unhealthy?
Because they are:
- The cheapest
- The fastest
- Because of the extremely small dental benefit plan reimbursements for any of type of filling, this is often the only choice affordable for many people and practices.
Amalgam ("silver") fillings were introduced into dentistry in the early 1800’s when we did not have any other restorative options. But we have had other options for 40+ years!
Amalgam fillings are intended to help lessen disease in underserved populationswith the least amount of contribution from government subsidized programs and dental benefit plans - both of which were never founded on optimal health, solid structure, long term sustainable function and ideal aesthetics. Instead, they were always intended to quickly lessen the oberall burden of disease in underserved population groups with limited access to care.
