April - Beginning a Season of Renewal

Happy Spring! ☀️It’s April!! time for warmer weather, sunshine and superblooms after a LOT of rain and cold weather!

It’s Spring Break time for students.  We are excited to have our middle daughter home from college in NYC!

It’s also time to recommit to many things we have been putting off.  Our oral health is one of the most important commitments we can make. 🙌🏻

Oral health and systemic health are connected! The bacteria from the mouth enters systemic blood stream and causes what’s called “bacteremia,” bacteria in the blood stream. The bacteria in the blood stream stimulates the immune system and causes system inflammation, reduces the body’s ability to fight infections, it even seeds the heart valves, can lead to infections elsewhere in the body, and makes us physically weaker, mentally unfocused, emotionally unbalanced and precludes us from enjoying an overall state of wellness.

The most common bacteria in dental plaque (the sticky bacterial matrix that forms on teeth) are Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria (which emit the odors that cause bad breath).  Most of the following species are present in people's mouths (among others): Treponema, Bacteroides, Prophyromonas, Prevotella, Capnacytophagam Peptostreptococcus, Fusobacterium, Actinobacillus, and Ekinella.

The latest research shows that there are even PARASITES 😱😨😱 (including amoebae, trichomonadsin) and YEAST in dental plaque!  These pathogens require much different treatment than bacteria!

With so many categories and strains within plaque (micorscopic examples shown in photos above), how do we know we are successfully treating them all?

Great question! We are introducing another tool to our ELITE patient care armamentarium - OralDNA® - an actual pathogen (disease causing agent) testing service to identify the specific pathogens in your body and treat those specific strains! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! Once we know exactly what we are treating we can be strategic, definitive and assure great outcomes!

OralDNA® is done using a simple swab that is easy, quick and painless!  To be clear, this test is to identify the DNA of strains of bacteria, fungus and parasites, not your body's DNA.

We all develop plaque with time. On average it takes about 3 months from the time of a hygiene visit for problematic plague to develop.  Do your teeth no longer feel smooth like they did after your last cleaning? That’s plaque. Might you have bad breath? Do your gums bleed or are the puffy or receding? Are your teeth discolored? All of these and more are signs of plague formation.

Let’s get tested! Get clear! Get Healed!

Schedule your preventive visit and a 15 min visit with our amazing hygienist, Aubrey for OralDNA® testing.

With love and gratitude,

Dr. Elona ❤️
